Bellary Fort in Bellary District of Karnataka State

Bellary Fort in Bellary District of Karnataka State: Located in the historic city of Ballari, the Ballari Fort stands atop Ballari Gudda or the Fort Hill. Historians believe the Palegar chief Hanumappa Nayaka constructed it during the Vijayanagara era. In 1769, Hyder Ali gained control of the fort from the Nayakas and enlisted a French engineer to renovate and modify it. Legend tells of the engineer's execution for failing to notice that neighboring Kumbara Gudda was taller, compromising the fort's secrecy. Some say his grave lies near the East Gate, though others believe it to be a Muslim holy man's.
