Davanagere District and Talukas: Davanagere District is an administrative district of Karnataka state in India. The city of Davanagere is the district headquarters. This district was carved out of Chitradurga district in 1997 by then Chief Minister of Karnataka. The district lies in the central plains of the state with its unique features of having dual cultures of the north and the south of the state. The prominent towns in this district are Harihara, Harapanahalli, Jagaluru, Honnali and Channagiri. There are five other Talukas. It is bound by Shimoga District and Haveri District on the west, Chitradurga District on the east, Bellary District on the north and Chikmagalur district on the south. It is one of the five districts in Karnataka currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). According to the 2011 census Davanagere district has a population of 20 lakhs.

Davanagere has a sex ratio of 967 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 76.3%. Davanagere was famous for textiles, with the DCM [Davanagere Cotton Mills] brand being famous in India. Davanagere was a major cotton textile exporter during the 1960's till the 80s. But most of the mills were shut down during the 90s and currently, the major agro-industrial activity around Davanagere revolves around rice and sugarcane, with a number of sugar mills in and around this area. Davanagere is known for its higher educational institutes, most of which are run by the Bapuji Educational Association & other institutions. Davanagere has two Dental colleges, three engineering colleges, two medical colleges, one ayurvedic medical college, a fashion design college and a number of other colleges offering courses in arts, commerce, and science. Davanagere does not have any airport. The nearest airport is at Hubli and the nearest International airport is in Bangalore. Davanagere is connected to Miraj, Bangalore, and Mysore by regular trains. The City Railway station is located in the heart of the city. Davanagere is linked with Pune, Bangalore, Shimoga and Hospet by road.
