The city is named after Syed Karimuddin, believed to be its founder. With a rich history evidenced by inscriptions of the Kakatiya king Prola II and Prataparudra found in Karimnagar and Srisailam, it was formerly known as 'Sabbinadu'. Karimnagar is known for its agricultural prominence, with vast agricultural land irrigated by the Godavari River. Nearby tourist attractions include Elgandal (10 km) and Vemulawada (35 km).

The district has been ruled by various dynasties, including the Shathavahanas, Mourya Kings, and Asafzalu Kings, as evidenced by the buildings and constructions left behind by these rulers, which serve as remarkable historical relics to this day.
