Gadag District is a district in the state of Karnataka, India. The district formed in 1997, when it was split from the
Dharwad District. The
Gadag District borders the Bagalkot District on the north, the Koppal District on the east, the
Bellary District on the southeast, the
Haveri District on the southwest, the Dharwad District on the west and the
Belgaum District on the northwest.

The district features monuments (primarily Jain and Hindu temples) from the Western Chalukya Empire.
Gadag District has seven tehsils. Printing and hand looms are the primarily main business in Gadag. Majority of population dependent on agriculture. According to the 2011 census the Gadag district has a population of 10 lakhs. The district has a population density of 229 inhabitants per square kilometer (590/sq. mi). Its population growth rate from 2001 to 2011 was 9.61percent. The district has a sex ratio of 978 females for every 1000 males and a literacy rate of 75.18 percent. This is also the land of great freedom fighters like Huilgol Narayana Rao and Shankar Rao Kampli who along with other freedom fighters founded "Azad Hind Seva Dal" which contributed a lot to the nations struggle for freedom. Hubli Airport is the nearest airport, which is about 60 km from Gadag, and future plans are running from Karnataka Government to set up a small Airport in Gadag. Gadag comes under the South Western Railway zone of the Indian Railways, Gadag is a Junction station on Hubli-Hospet-Guntukal railway line. Gadag is well connected by roads to all major cities like Hubli, Bellary, Bangalore, Hospet and Bijapur. NH-63 Passes through the city. NWKRTC Government City buses & green and black auto-rickshaws are the basic mode of transport in City. Overall Gadag has been a renowned center of learning, with numerous schools, colleges for engineering, medicine and management studies.
