Kadapa District  Profile,History mandals and Tourist  Places: Kadapa district is in Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. This district is famous for Barites mines. There are Nellore district on the east, Anatapur on west, Chittoor on south and Kurnool and Prakasam district on north. There are 51 revenue mandals in the district and 896 villages. Total number of Gram Panchayats is 644.

Penna, Chitravati, Kundu, Cheyyeru, Gunjaneru, Papagni, Bahuda, Mandavya and Ganganeru rivers flow in the districts. Most of these rivers are tributaries to Penna River. The Penna water reaches Somasila Project in Nellore district after Siddhavatam. Penna flows for around 150 kilometers in the district. Handrineeva sujalsravanti project and Pulivendula project are under construction. Annamayya, Somasila, Veligallu and Zharikona are some of the ongoing and proposed projects for the district.


Let us now know the Kadapa History. The history of Kadapa began with Mouryas. The place was under the rule of king Ashok during the period 224 – 236 BC. It was called the ‘Mulikinadu’. According to historians, this is called the ‘Hiranyarashtram’ in Ikshwakus. The place was ruled by Pallavas, Badamis, Chalukyas, Banas, Cholas, Kakatiyas and Vijayanagara rulers and also Qutbshahs, Hyderali, Tipu Sultan, Asafjahis, Mughals and Britishers. some of the greatest kings who ruled this place are Ashoka and Gautami Putra Satakarni.

Tourist Places in Kadapa District

Kadapa Tourist Places attract many tourists as the district houses many important forts, temples and forests.

1)Ontimitta Sri Kodanda Rama Temple has historical importance. The temple is located in the Kadapa, Chennai route, Sita, Rama and Lakshmana are the main deities here and all three are placed on a single platform which is one of the interesting features of the temple. This place was earlier called the Ekasila Nagaram. Andhra Pradesh government announced this temple as the main temple for conducting Sri Ramanavami celebrations of the government after the bifurcation of the state.

2)Gandikota is the fort of Vijayanagara rulers. It is at a distance of 7 kilometers from Kadapa. There are Raghunatha temple, Madhavaraya Swamy temple, a mosque, jail, pond etc in the fort. We can reach the fort by bus from Kadapa and Jammalamadugu.

3)Forest department developed red sandal wood trees park in Railway Koduru town which is a must see place for the tourists. It is spread in an area of 50 acres. There are boating facilities, hotels and cottages.

4)Other tourist attractions are Pushpagiri, Nagesula Konda, Aminpeer Dargah and St Mary Cathedral.

Kadapa district has many popular universities and technical colleges. Yogi Vemana university, Rajiv Institute of medical sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru Technical university, government homeo college etc.
