Amritsar District With Tehsils in Punjab State: Amritsar, founded by Sri Guru Ramdass, the fourth guru of the Sikhs, around 1574 A.D., had its origins in an area covered with dense forests and numerous lakes. The Guru invited 52 traders from neighboring regions, such as Patti and Kasur, to settle in the area, initiating the city's establishment. These families pioneered the first 32 shops in the city, still standing in the street known as Batisi Hatta (32 shops). Guru Ramdass himself relocated to live among them, leading to the city being named Ramdaspur, as glorified in the Guru Granth Sahib.

The construction of Amrit Sarovar, from which the city derives its present name, was initiated by Sri Guru Ramdass. His successor, Sri Guru Arjan Dev, completed the project and situated the Harmandir Sahib in its midst. Subsequently, when Guru Arjan Dev finished the writing of the Holy Granth Sahib, a ceremonial installation of a copy of Guru Granth Sahib took place in Harmandir Sahib. Baba Buddha Sahib was appointed as the First Granthi.
