Raigad District With Talukas & Tourist Places in Maharashtra State: Raigad district was earlier called the Colaba district. It is a district belonging to the Konkan division of Maharashtra state. The district headquarter is Alibag. Borders of the district are Mumbai and Thane districts in the north, Satara district in the southeast, Pune district in the east and Ratnagiri district in the south.

The average literacy rate of the district is 83.14%. There are five assembly constituencies: Lailunga, Raigarh, Sarangarh, Kharsiya and Dharamjaigarh. It has 15 talukas and 8 sub-divisions, namely Alibag, Pen, Panvel, Kajrat, Roha, Mangaon, Shrivardhan and Mahad. It has 1900 villages. The primary language of the district is Marathi. People also speak Hindi, Urdu and Konkani. More than 85% of the people follow Hinduism.

 

History of Raigad District

the old name of Raigad is the Kolaba district. It is believed that when Chhatrapati Shivaji made it the capital of the Maratha empire, the place's name was changed to Raigad after the fort. This happened in the year 1656. In the 19th century, the district was separated from the Thane district.

 

Tourist Places in Raigad District

Raigad district is famous for the historical places, beaches, landscapes, flora, and fauna in the Western Ghats. There are forts, including the Raigad fort, after which the district is given the name Raigad. Other important forts include the Kolaba fort, Murud-Janjira fort, and Sudhagad fort. Ashtavinyaka temple and Elephanta caves are popular religious places.

Among the exciting tourist places in the district, Raigad fort is the most important one. This is in Mahad, which is at a distance of 25 km from Raigad. There is a ropeway to reach the fort. It has an artificial lake called ‘Ganga Sagar lake. Another attraction in the Raigad district is the Matheran hill station. It is at an altitude of 800 m. Panorama point, King George point, Echo point, Paymasters park etc., are the places visited by tourists.

The nearest airport to Raigad district is Lohegaon airport, Pune and Chhatrapati Shivaji airport in Mumbai. Mumbai, Pune and Panvel are the closest railway stations. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation runs buses to all major towns and tourist places in the Raigad district.
