Parbhani is the headquarter of the district. Borders of the district are
Hingoli and Buldhana districts in the north, Latur in the south, Beed and Jalna districts in the west and
Nanded and Hingoli districts in the east. Parbhani district area is 6250.58 square meters.
Overview of Parbhani District
Parbhani district is 357 meters above sea level. The climate of the district is tropical. The district is
divided into Parbhani, Purna, Palam, Pathri, Gangakhed, Sonpeth, Manwath, Selu and Jintur
tehsils. There are 7 municipalities, 1 municipal corporation, 834 revenue mandals and 848
villages. Parbhani district population as per the 2011 census is 1,836,086. Population density is
295 per square kilometre. There are 940 females for every 1000 males. The literacy rate of the state
is 75.22%. More than 78% of the population speaks Marathi. Other languages spoken by the
people are Urdu, Hindi and Lambadi.
History of Parbhani District
Parbhani was earlier called Prabhavathi and is named after Goddess Prabhavathi. Most parts of
the present Parbhani district region were under the Mughal Empire till 1724. After that, it became
part of the Nizam kingdom. In 1956, after the reorganization of states, the districts that came under the Marathwada region were included in the Bombay state. With the formation of Maharashtra state
in 1960, the Parbhani region became part of it.
Tourist Places in Parbhani District
Parbhani district is very popular for Jain and Hindu tourism. Parbhani district is also called the
land of saints. The district is well connected to other places by road, railway and airways. Tourist
attractions include nature, parks and temples.
Pathri, the birthplace of Dattatreya is a holy site visited by a large number of devotees. Jintur is a
Jain temple and is a very famous tourist place in the district. Mudgaleshwar temple is situated in
the middle of River Godavari. The temple is believed to be built nine hundred years ago.
Devotees have to swim to the temple to have the darshan of Narasimha Swamy which is in the
form of “Shivalinga”. The best time to visit this temple is from April to June. Selu town is another
must visit place in the district. This is the home town of Shri Sai Baba’s guru “Shri Babasaheb
Maharaj”. Sai baba is believed to have stayed here for nearly twelve years.
