Palghar District With Talukas & Tourist Places in Maharashtra State: Palghar district is one of the districts in the Konkan region of
Maharashtra state. It is in the northern part
of the division. This is the 36th district of the state, formed in 2014. Boundaries of the district are Thane
and Nashik districts in the east and northeast, the Arabian Sea in the west, the Valsad district of Gujarat, and
Dadra and Nagar Haveli in the north. Palghar district area is 5,344 square kilometres. The districts have eight taluks: Jawhar, Mokhda, Talasri, Vasai, Vikramgad, Palghar, Dahanu,
and Wada.

Overview of Palghar District
Palghar district was formed in 2014 and is carved out of the Thane district. Palghar district population,
according to the 2011 census, is 2.990,116. Population density is 560 per square kilometre. 48% of the
total population lives in urban areas. There are 1007 villages and 467 gram panchayats in the district. The literacy rate is 66.65%. 72.23% of males are literate, and the female literacy rate is 59.2%. The official language spoken here is Marathi. People also speak Hindi, Varli and Gujarati. Six Vidhan
sabha constituencies are Dahanu, Vikramgad, Palghar, Boisar, Nalasopara and Vasai. Palghar is the
only Lok Sabha constituency.
History of Palghar District
Palghar district region, which was part of the Thane district, was ruled by the Portuguese. Palghar region
played a vital role in the Indian freedom movement. Five people, namely Govind Ganesh Thakur,
Ramprasad Bhimashankar Tiwari, Ramachandra Mahadev Churi and Govind Sukur More, were killed
by the British in 1942. “Paachbatti”, or five lights, is the main circle in Palghar named in honour of these
three freedom fighters. This region was part of the Thane district until 2014. The demand for a separate
district started almost 25 years before that. The announcement of the new district formation came on 13 June 2014, and the district came into existence in the same year on 1 August.
