History of Mumbai City District


Mumbai is named after Mumba Devi, who was worshipped by Kolis. The region is surrounded by water on all three sides. Mumbai city consists of many islands. It was first ruled by Agris and Kolis who were native of the region. After that it was under the ruling of many dynasties and finally, Islamic rulers conquered Mumbai. Later Mumbai Island was given to the British and remained part of their kingdom until 15 August 1947. In 1960, Mumbai was made a part of Maharashtra through the Bombay Reorganization Act.
